Unit description

Introduces students to the theory and practice of Organisational Behaviour (OB). Central to this objective is the study of OB at three levels of analysis – 1) Individual, 2) Group, and 3) System. Collectively this structure provides the opportunity for students to recognise how workplace behaviour can be effectively managed so that desired organisational outcomes are achieved. Students will also have the opportunity to apply much of the unit content to their personal career context.

  • Attitudes, perception and decision making
  • Workplace motivation: theory and practice

Module 2: Interpersonal and group processes

  • Understanding groups and teams
  • Leadership, power and politics

Module 3: The organisational system

  • Managing organisational culture and change

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Collect, appraise and appropriately cite relevant information from a range of academic sources.

describe the functions, roles and skills of a manager, and how they contribute to key organisational outcomes.

present and critically analyse opposing views of the factors that influence workplace behaviour.

identify and evaluate the characteristics of effective workplace teams, as supported by empirical research.

demonstrate a broad understanding of OB theory and concepts as they apply to the effective functioning of organisations, including issues of power, politics, structure and change.
