Introduces students to the fundamentals of heat transfer, and covers applications in mechanical engineering thermal systems. The unit revises the different modes of heat transfer, conduction, convection and radiation and the design of heat exchangers.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify and explain the fundamental principles of heat transfer

analyse thermal engineering problems in terms of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer

model and solve heat transfer problems

develop skills in effectively using virtual simulation environments for modelling of heat transfer phenomena, and in reporting findings

understand the application of thermodynamics and heat transfer in mechanical engineering professional practice.
