Unit of Study MECH3002 - Machine Element Design (2021)

Show me unit information for year

Unit Snapshot

  • Enrolment information

This unit applies the engineering principles and design techniques from CIVL2001 - Mechanics of Materials and MECH2002 - Introduction to Mechanical Design and Manufacturing, including force analysis in beams, shells and irregular structures, reaction forces and moments, and generating shear force and bending moment diagrams. Students will use apply their knowledge of manufacturing techniques and use computer aided design (CAD) software (SolidWorks) to design machine components and prepare engineering drawings.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

design typical machine components and joints against possible modes of failure, including yield, fracture and fatigue

apply formal procedures of engineering design and the methods for choosing between competing alternatives, and develop skills in recording design calculations and reasoning in a workbook

demonstrate an understanding of safety issues, risk management and legal responsibility in engineering design

approach design problem formulation so that solutions can be sought

conduct and document design work as a team

demonstrate advanced skills with CAD software package.
