Unit description

Further develops the study of engineering dynamics. The focus is on machines, associated mechanisms, and vibration. Emphasis is on the dynamic forces within machines and their significance with respect to the equipment they drive, are driven by or are mounted on. An industry-standard software package is used for modelling, complex calculations and visualisation. Some guided self-learning is expected.

Introduction to MATLAB and Simulink

Free and forced vibration of single degree-of-freedom systems

Vibration of multi-degree-of-freedom systems

Vibration measurement

Vibration transmission and isolation

Learning outcomes

develop problem solving skills in situations where dynamically generated forces and motions are significant

develop skills in effectively and safely using equipment in a team environment for experimental investigation and measurement of dynamics phenomena, and in reporting findings

understand the application of dynamics in mechanical engineering professional practice.
