Unit description

Introduces students to contemporary video-based journalism production models and their application on broadcast, online and mobile platforms. This unit critically analyses the forms, styles and features of video-based reporting in the contemporary digital and broadcast news environment. Practical exercises and assessment tasks contribute to the development of students’ research, planning and video production skills.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify and critically analyse the different forms of news and current affairs video-based journalism

demonstrate competency in operating digital video production and editing equipment

plan, research, report, produce, edit and distribute video-based journalism reports

demonstrate an understanding of roles involved in video news production, working effectively, ethically and professionally, individually or as part of a small production team.

Prescribed Resources/Equipment

  • Students will need access to audio-visual recording equipment such as a digital video recorder or a digital still camera with video functions and an external microphone with connectors suited to your video recorder. Alternatively, students may use a smart phone with an external microphone adapter. These could be consumer cameras and recorders, smartphones, or high-end professional technologies – it is up to you. You will need to discuss how to resource your video reports with your unit assessor or tutor.  Advice is provided in the unit's Orientation Module. 

    Students must also have access to closed ear headphones and a tripod. (Ear-bud style headphones are not appropriate for this unit.)

    Students will also need access to digital video editing software. Recommended options will be listed on the unit's MySCU learning site early in the session. 

    Students will require internet access with sufficient bandwidth to allow students to upload video mp4 files for assessment.
