There will be a 1-day compulsory residential at the Lismore Campus. This unit requires software that is only compatible with Windows (W10 and newer).
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
explain basic chemical concepts relevant to engineering materials
apply knowledge of the physical, chemical, thermal, electric, and optical properties of engineering materials to predict and explain their behaviour in practical applications
perform team-based, hands-on laboratory experiments to investigate and analyse the behaviours of engineering materials through processes such as deflection, torsion, buckling, compression, and sieving
select appropriate materials for engineering applications considering design requirements
explain stress and strain in various materials and relate these mechanical behaviours to the underlying atomic bonds, material performance and failure mechanisms.
