Unit description

Introduces students to the legal system of Papua New Guinea as well as aspects of business law. The unit focuses on the law of contract and also considers negligence, consumer protection and agency, with an emphasis on legal problem-solving. The connection between law and ethics and the role of ethics in business are also explored.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Describe and critically discuss the structure of the Papua New Guinean legal system and how laws are made and developed

Apply the fundamental principles of the laws relating to the creation, construction, and discharge of contracts, to solve legal problems in business and commerce.

Apply the fundamental principles of the laws relating to negligence, consumer protection and agency to solve legal problems in business and commerce .

Demonstrate basic understanding of legislation and case law relevant to business and commerce, and of the interrelationship between law and ethics.
