Unit description

Students are introduced to the Australian legal system. Students also gain an understanding of several key areas of law relating to business and commerce including tort law (negligence and misrepresentation) and business structures. Because contracts and consumer rights underpin business and commerce, students focus on the law of contract and related statutes such as the Australian Consumer Law.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe Australia's system of government and how it impacts business decision-making

explain relevant statute and common law in relation to defective products and misrepresentations in business and commerce

explain the key principles of contract law and the influence of consumer protection legislation

describe the law regarding sole traders, partnerships and companies
