    This is an intensive unit taught on-campus/online over 4 days. Class times and room details will be provided on the School of Law and Justice website and posted to the learning site. Students must be able to commit to the delivery mode before enrolling in this unit.

Unit description

Introduces the rules and principles underpinning the European Union internal market. Students will gain a critical understanding of the four European Union freedoms: free movement of persons, free movement of goods, freedom of establishment and services, and free movement of capitals.  Examines the European Union legal system  and the complementary rules adopted to guarantee the proper functioning of the internal market.

Unit content

Topic 1: What is and how works the European Union? Origins, members, institutions, principles, and objectives. Approach to the different “Europes” (Monetary Union, Schengen, and European Economic Area. The Council of Europe).

Topic 2: The Internal Market of the EU: concept, objectives and dimensions.

Topic 3: Third countries members and EU.

Topic 4: The EU competition Law, and the protection of consumers in the EU.

Topic 5: The solution of conflicts in the EU: the unification of rules of international private law.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate knowledge of the rules and principles underpinning the EU internal market

identify and compare the different branches of the EU and their complementary rules

describe the relationships between the four freedoms of the EU and the rules and principles underpinning the EU internal market

identify the rules used to solve conflicts in the EU8

demonstrate their research skills and critical analysis in the field of the EU.
