Unit description

The SCU Law Discipline places considerable emphasis on the gaining of insights and practical skills through the completion of a significant period of time working within the legal environment. Clinical Legal Experience is a unit that aims to help students gain insights into the role of legal practitioners and the practice of community law and to support their transition to admission as a legal practitioner.

Unit content

This unit involves placements at community legal centres or other not-for-profit legal providers (both domestic and international), whereby students will develop their understanding of community law while gaining practical skills. Students will attend workplace clinics for a minimum of 14 days. Tasks undertaken at the host organisation may vary. In domestic placements, students may be required to engage with clients and assist in interviews, advice, client work and undertake community legal education, law reform and project work. Such work would be under the close supervision of a legal practitioner. In international placements, students may be required to assist in the development of community legal education materials, assist in the delivery of legal education and other project work.

Attendance for the clinic placements and at the introductory and final tutorials, is compulsory.

A Law Placement Form must be submitted and approved PRIOR to commencing the placement. Enquiries should be directed to the Professional Experience Coordinator through wil@scu.edu.au

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in the practice of law

demonstrate an understanding of the social justice framework in which community law is practised

demonstrate highly developed reflective practise skills

demonstrate legal problem-solving skills; highly developed research, written and oral communication skills.
