Unit description

Introduces the concept of performance and its articulation in the legal, literary and linguistic spheres, and the realm of the performing arts. Students will be introduced to types of performance from literature and theatre (in its wider conception). Investigates the crossing and blurring of the boundaries with a specific focus on the intersections with legal culture.  

Unit content

Topic 1: The concept of performance and its connection with the legal field. Law as performance and law in performance

Topic 2: Law, Performance and Power:  a visual perspective. The Renaissance context and the Renaissance and Jacobean theatre

Topic 3: Law, Performance and Power: the Victorian period and the articulation of identity

Topic 4: Law, Performance and Power:  the contemporary period  and the digital baroque (dystopias, legal thriller, contemporary performing arts)

All the topics will include examples from the different literary and cultural fields (literature, theatre, performing arts, visual artistic expressions)

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate knowledge of the various articulations of the concept of performance and their development through the different historical periods.

examine the intersection of the concept of performance with other theoretical fields: visual studies, law and literature, law and culture, theatre studies, performing arts.

apply the theoretical frameworks to literary and cultural texts.

research new examples in line with the concepts addressed during the course and demonstrate skills in critical analysis and the written presentation of research and argument.
