    This eight week unit will have a compulsory residential workshop at the Lismore campus. Please refer to the Teaching Timetable which can be found on the Environment Science and Engineering (ESE) Student Centre in MySCU. It is assumed that all students can use ArcGIS or a similar GIS to analyse spatial data and produce maps.

Unit description

Examines the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) to manage earth resources. Students will focus on the principles, sensor characteristics, extraction of information from remotely sensed data and applications of remote sensing with relevance to GIS applications. Students will develop practical spatial data analysis skills in the laboratory to solve problems relevant to environmental management.

Unit content

  1. Remote sensing of the environment — vegetation, water, urban landscape, soils, minerals, and geomorphology
  2. Electromagnetic radiation principles
  3. Aerial Photography — history, vantage point, cameras and filters
  4. Elements of visual image interpretation
  5. Photogrammetry
  6. Multispectral remote sensing systems
  7. Active remote sensing
  8. LIDAR remote sensing
  9. Other remote sensing platforms
  10. Strategies for problem solving in resource management
