Unit description

Examines remote sensing and GIS as tools used by earth scientists to study the spatial associations, spatial extent of earth surface features and provide necessary information to decision makers to manage earth resources. Students will primarily concentrate on the principles, sensor characteristics, extraction of information from remotely sensed data and applications of remote sensing with some relevance to GIS and will experience 'hands-on' training in computer processing of digital data.

1. Remote Sensing of the Environment, Electromagnetic Radiation Principles, History of Aerial Photography and Aerial Platforms 
2. Aerial Photography - Vantage Point, Cameras, Filters, and Film 
3. Elements of Visual Image Interpretation 
4. Photogrammetry 
5. Multispectral Remote Sensing Systems 
6. Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing 
7. Active and Passive Microwave Remote Sensing
8. LIDAR Remote Sensing (new) 
9. Remote Sensing of Vegetation, water, urban landscape, soils, minerals, and geomorphology
10. (Optional - if time) In situ Spectral Reflectance Measurement
