Unit description

Introduces computing, basic statistics and scientific writing skills required for environmental management. Use of spreadsheets, word processors, library databases, presentation software and the Internet is included. Different variable types, how to summarise and graphically represent data and basic descriptive statistics are introduced. Emphasis is placed on managing and presenting environmental information and helping students become independent in their future computing activities.

Unit content

  1. Word processing
  2. Application of spreadsheets
  3. Data analysis
  4. Introduction to statistics: data types, number skills, rounding, significant figures and use of scientific calculators
  5. Description of sample data: tables, graphs, frequency distributions, histograms and polygons
  6. Measures of central tendency: mean, mode and median
  7. Measures of dispersion, variance and standard deviation
  8. Presentation software.
