Unit description

Introduces students to the origins and concepts that inform race theory and the ways that race is employed to impel, explain and justify colonial intrusion and violations. Issues of racism and eugenics are examined in the Australian context.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse and interpret race theory and deconstruct the origins of anti-racism in English speaking communities

critically review the eugenic structures embedded in colonising movements and apparent in Australian policy and practices regarding Aboriginal people

critically review racial discourse in Australia as informed by eugenic practice.
