Unit description

Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to apply research for real-life industry/business problems and solutions that support business decision making and outcomes. Students utilise knowledge gained from earlier units to prepare and present a research plan that investigates a hospitality-related problem. Students will present their proposals to academic and industry stakeholders.  

Unit content

Part A of the Applied Hotel Research unit enables students to identify and generate a proposal for a ‘real time’ industry problem. The research project will be completed in Applied Hotel Research Part B.

  1. Introduction to applied research
  2. Determining research scope and focus
  3. Literature – what we know and need to know
  4. Research design
  5. Assessing data sources, quality and relevancy
  6. Presenting the research proposal

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Identify, conceptualise, contextualise, and state a research-worthy hospitality-related problem

Critically review the literature relevant to the problem

Design a research project that addresses the problem and is feasible to undertake

Orally present a research proposal to both academics and industry stakeholders that addresses the research problem
