Unit description

This unit explores the role of a clinical exercise physiologist in cancer and special populations, focusing on how exercise can aid in managing these conditions. It also develops skills in clinical assessment, teamwork, communication (both written and verbal), and critical clinical reasoning for designing and delivering safe, evidence-based exercise interventions.

1. Introduction to exercise in the management of people diagnosed with cancer

2. Exercise and assessment for people diagnosed with cancer (before and during treatment)

3. Exercise and assessment for people diagnosed with cancer (survivorship and palliative care)

4. Special populations 1: exercise and assessment for pain and chronic pain

5. Special populations 2: exercise and assessment for aging, men’s and women’s health,

6. Special populations 3: exercise and assessment for respiratory health, and Indigenous Australians’ health

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explore the diagnosis, treatment and side effects of cancer treatment and impact on capacity to exercise

explore health conditions in special populations including diagnosis, treatment and side effects that will impact capacity to exercise

develop assessment and exercise programming skills, and clinical reasoning for special populations including those diagnosed with cancer
