Unit description

Develops a foundational knowledge of the principles of safety in healthcare, through undertaking various clinical skills and health assessments. With this knowledge, students are provided with an opportunity, to work alongside their colleagues to acquire, practise and demonstrate foundational communication, observational and assessment skills that underpin clinical practice. Practice in laboratory sessions and simulated rehearsal prepares students to carry out foundational assessment skills ensuring a focus on patient safety and minimising adverse events.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate safe and competent practice for a range of foundational skills

discuss the components of clinical reasoning frameworks and the use of ISBAR as it relates to effective communication

demonstrate awareness of the principles of infection prevention and control and manual handling

demonstrate an awareness of the principles of developing health communication techniques related to clinical practice, cognisant of the need for cultural sensitivity and awareness
