Unit description

Introduces students to holistic understandings of mental health and wellbeing and the determinants of mental health and illness. Students will be encouraged to appreciate the lived experience of mental health, illness, and service use and develop empathic and trauma informed understandings of people’s experience of mental health care. Students will develop an understanding of how to view and respond effectively to people seeking to resolve mental health problems and consider how this can be realised in the Australian Health System.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of the lived experience of mental distress across the lifespan and how this can inform practice and service development

identify and collaboratively discuss how holistic, person-centred understandings of mental wellbeing, health and illness can direct effective provision of care

describe and collaboratively demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of trauma-informed practice

discuss the role and impact of the mental healthcare system and integrated care
