Unit description

Examines the relationship between occupational performance, the psychosocial dimensions of mental function and related environmental and social factors that impact on mental health. The theory and practice of occupational therapy assessment and intervention will be analysed and applied to address occupational performance concerns associated with mental health and well-being.

Unit content

Topic 1: Overview of the psychosocial domain of practice 
Topic 2: Overview of relationship between occupational performance and mental health 
Topic 3: Impact of drug and alcohol abuse on occupational performance 
Topic 4: Service models and areas of occupational therapy practice in mental health 
Topic 5: Global trends, federal and state policies, and other practice trends such as the use of evidence, partnerships and consumer focused practice - implications for people with mental illness and mental health practice. 
Topic 6: National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2002) Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation, standards and guidelines. 
Topic 7: Concepts of wellness, recovery and resilience 
Topic 8: Mental Health Outcome and Assessment Tools (MH-OAT) and Occupational Therapy assessments in mental health 
Topic 9: Application of theoretical frames of reference &/ or conceptual practice models in occupational therapy programs in mental health 
Topic 10: Individual and group intervention approaches (theory & practice) 
Topic 11: OT treatment/program planning in mental health using case studies

4 Select and conduct relevant assessments in order to investigate the relationship between occupational performance, mental health and substance addition.
5 Apply knowledge of the person, occupation and environment in planning, implementing and evaluating collaborative mental health programs.
6 Apply theoretical perspectives and best practice models in planning and implementing occupational therapy programs for specific clients within a mental health practice setting.
7 Identify and assess the functional outcomes of intervention.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
