Unit description

Introduces students to the practice of occupational therapy for individuals whose occupational performance has been impacted by a range of cognitive/mental impairments. Through lectures and laboratories, students will develop theory driven and practical clinical reasoning skills to guide their approach to assessment and intervention for clients with cognitive impairments.

Unit content

Topic 1: Introduction to Cognition Assessment and Intervention
Topic 2: General Principals of Cognition – theoretical overview and models of cognitive function
Topic 3: Consciousness, Attention and Orientation – functional anatomy of brain
Topic 4: Methods of assessing cognitive functioning and setting appropriate client centred goals
Topic 5: Perception – assessing sensory function and exploring theories of perception and sensation in
relation to occupational performance and treatment
Topic 6: Memory and Orientation – how these affect functional performance and occupational therapy intervention
Topic 7: Executive Function – planning, problem solving and judgement and how these impact functional performance
Topic 8: Application of knowledge to specific case studies
Topic 9: Sleep and Sleep Hygiene
Topic 10: PRPP – Perceive, Recall, Plan, Perform

1 understand the cognitive/mental processes that affect learning and functional performance
2 identify and describe characteristics of cognitive impairments impacting on the occupational performance in children and adults with neurological, developmental, learning or mental health disorders. These may include TBI, Dementia, Autism, Intellectual Impairment, Downs Syndrome
3 develop evidence based intervention principles and strategies that include those used by a range of professionals as well as those specific to occupational therapists: cognitive based interventions, psycho-education, family interventions, early intervention, rehabilitation, relapse prevention and mental health promotion
4 design and implement occupational therapy programs that are client-centred and occupation-embedded to address the impact of cognitive impairment on everyday task performance for people with impairments and their families
5 critically analyse major theoretical frameworks that have shaped occupational therapy assessment and intervention in this area of practice
6 analyse and report how perceptual deficits impact task performance in individuals with traumatic brain injury
7 identify community resources available to assist clients with cognitive impairments and their families.
