Unit description

Students will explore both the theoretical and conceptual foundations of traumatic stress syndromes at four interrelated levels: biological, psychological, socio-interpersonal and cultural. Definitions and theories of cultural safety are also examined in relation to therapeutic responses in responding to traumatic stress syndromes.

Unit content

Topic 1: The principles of cultural safety in working with diverse populations.
Topic 2: Symptomatology of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Topic 3: Trauma and the limbic system: the stress response.
Topic 4: Developmental levels and psychobiological effects of trauma (child development)
Topic 5: Indigenous therapeutic approaches in responding to trauma.
