Unit description

Explores the role of clinical accountability in the health care context and the concepts of professional accountability within organisations. Students are provided with opportunities to develop critical perspectives through reconstructing their worldview of service improvement and effective clinical outcomes. The fundamental concepts of clinical governance are introduced.

Understanding clinical accountability:

  • key principles of professional standards
  • relationship to Australian health care policy

Introduction to clinical standards:

  • identifying policies and agencies governing clinical practice
  • regulations and acts

Understanding clinical governance:

  • relationship to adverse events
  • legal issues in practice
  • service improvement and clinical decision making
