Unit description

Provides detailed study of the musculoskeletal system in relation to functional anatomy and biomechanical principles for human movement, in the context of health, disease, injury and ageing. Develops the ability to perform musculoskeletal movement analyses from a functional anatomy perspective.

Unit content

  • Functional musculoskeletal anatomy for the upper limb, neck and trunk, lower limb;
  • Tissue mechanics and mechanical properties of bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon and muscle;
  • Practical exercises in performing anatomical identification from surface anatomy and for performing musculoskeletal movement analyses involving the upper limb, neck and trunk, lower limb;
  • Biomechanical and kinesiological factors for disease and injury in the musculoskeletal system.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate a detailed knowledge of muscle actions and synergies in the human musculoskeletal system

identify structures using surface anatomy landmarks and features

conduct basic musculoskeletal movement and postural analyses

demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system in the context of human movement, exercise and injury

demonstrate an understanding of the mechanical properties of biological tissues and apply this knowledge to the mechanical properties of bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and muscle, in the context of exercise, immobilization, ageing and injury.
