Unit Snapshot

  • Enrolment information

This unit will not include formal lectures. Content will be delivered online through the MySCU Learning Site for the unit, and students are expected to read this material. There will be a 5 day compulsory tour of wood processing industries for all students (Online and On Campus). In 2017 this tour will be conducted in southern NSW between 4/12 to 8/12. There will be costs to students for travel and accommodation. Students will be expected to make their way to Canberra or Sydney airport (whichever suits best according to cost and time) where they will be picked up and travel by bus to Tumut. Further travel in the region will be undertaken during the following 5 days. Students will be returned to Canberra at the end of the week. There will be no cost for the bus. Accommodation will be subsidized for the entire class to the amount of $2000. All other costs will need to be carried by students.

Learning outcomes and graduate attributes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. 4 understand the concept of multiple outputs from wood manufacturing processes due to variability in the input and how to optimise returns from a mix of high and low value products.
5 demonstrate a capacity to prepare a cost-benefit table for all process inputs/outputs, and the final net return.
6 demonstrate an understanding of the common manufacturing processes applied to wood products manufacturing and develop strategies for adding value to wood products in a given market context.
