Unit description

Considers plantation forests in a worldwide context as native forests become increasingly protected. Plantations provide environmental protection, carbon sequestration and wood for human use. This course uses a general teaching approach to introduce the science behind the technologies involved in sustainable management of plantations of both native and exotic species.

  • Policies and ethos surrounding the approach today to plantation forestry
  • Choice of species and suitability of sites for plantation establishment
  • Nursery practices, site cultivation, planting and post-planting tending
  • Nutritional management of plantations
  • Thinning and pruning practice
