Unit description

Introduces students to ethical principles, standards and contemporary issues applicable to Australian financial advisers. Informing a wide array of professional contexts, the unit emphasises key ethical theories and frameworks, the financial advice environment, the capabilities and moral responsibilities of financial advisers, ethical conflicts of interest and the client-adviser relationship, the ethical decision-making process, and the importance of effective problem solving and communication. Students will participate in teacher directed activities and experiences relevant to ethical frameworks and the values and professional standards of the FASEA Code of Ethics. Students will also engage with case studies/scenarios that demonstrate complex ethical dilemmas encountered by financial advisers, providing opportunities to offer practical solutions and advisory recommendations.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify and explain the role of ethical, regulatory and legal frameworks and professional standards in the financial advice environment

recognise and discuss the importance of due diligence and the best interests duty of a financial adviser

demonstrate and communicate an understanding of the values, obligations and professional standards that underpin the FASEA Code of Ethics

apply ethical frameworks and professional standards to solve dilemmas encountered by financial advisers.
