Unit description

This unit explores the nature of economics as relevant to ecology, ecosystem management and sustainable development. Drawing from a range of economic concepts and methods, the unit investigates traditional and contemporary perspectives used to articulate the relationship between environment and economy. This unit engages with topical issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, natural capital accounting and applies economic rationale to current environmental challenges.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

employ economic theory and concepts to describe the interactions between the environment and the economy

assess the role of economics in environmental policy design and evaluation

evaluate the difference between environmental economics and ecological economics, and the implications of these differences for sustainable development

argue for the application of natural capital accounting in environmental planning and policy development.
