Unit description

The principal aim in this unit is to make students aware of the relationship between human development and the environment. Across the world, managing this relationship is a key determinant to success in managing the environment, and its available resources. At the same time, effective environmental management is also a key determinant of the current and future level of both human wellbeing, and environmental degradation. The focus of this unit will be on issues relating to all aspects of economic development, including those important to Australia, and those more relevant in the region, or globally. The overall goal would be to encourage students to understand the need for a moderation of the human development process, in recognition of the limitations of sustainable management of our environmental resources. In particular this unit will help students develop skills in: - Communication skills (written, verbal) - Flexible thinking - Ethics

  • Demography and Human migration patterns and their political implications
  • Development and conflict
  • Distributional issues, poverty and gender
  • Climate and development
  • Environmental monitoring and pressure on global resources
  • Challenges of water management in the 21st century
  • Resource recycling and renewable energy Impacts of international trade
  • Traditional knowledge from all continents, and how this can relate to environmental management today
  • Multinational companies as a block to sustainable development
  • Considering future scenarios
