Unit description

Provides students with the fundamental theory of mechanical design and how to apply this in designing and analysing a wide range of machine components. Students will gain an understanding of the basic and advanced elements used in machine design. These include the characteristics of gears, bearings, shafts, keys, fasteners, weldments, springs, brakes and clutches, and flexible elements. It also provides analytical and case-based knowledge to make machines as integrated systems of machine elements.

1. Design, manufacture and assembly of basic machine elements  

2. Materials  

3. Machine frames   

4. Welded, adhesive and bolted joints, fasteners  

5. Stepped shafts  

6. Rolling element bearings  

7. Gear mechanics and manufacture  

8. Design for strength  

9. Design for other mechanical failure modes including fatigue, stress concentration  

10. Safety, ergonomics and standards
