Unit description

Examines the responses of bodies or systems of bodies at rest and the internal stress-strain response of fluids and solids when subjected to loads.

Unit content

Module 1:  Introduction to engineering mechanics
 
Module 2:  Sectional properties, internal forces, stresses and strains and friction
 
Module 3:  Structural analysis of simple structures
 
Module 4:  Axial loads, buckling and torsion
 
Module 5:  Bending, shear and combined loadings
 
Module 6:  Stress and strain transformation and deflection of beams

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

define and calculate load actions and frictional forces acting on bodies in equilibrium

define and calculate the forces acting on and in a static fluid

define and calculate internal stresses and strains in solid materials

analyse axial and shear forces, bending moments, and torsional and buckling behaviour in simple structures subjected to static loads
