Unit of Study ENG20007 - Engineering Computations (2020)

Show me unit information for year

Unit Snapshot

  • Enrolment information

This is an advanced mathematics unit that builds on mathematics knowledge from earlier units. It is essential for success in this unit that students are competent in three areas: calculus, statistics, and linear algebra. There are a few options on how to obtain those competencies, depending on the whether taking the standard or advanced maths units.

Learning outcomes and graduate attributes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

GA1: Intellectual rigour, GA2: Creativity, GA3: Ethical practice, GA4: Knowledge of a discipline, GA5: Lifelong learning, GA6: Communication and social skills, GA7: Cultural competence

2 understand and implement basic numerical algorithms for computing solutions of non-linear and linear equations, mathematical programming and optimisation
3 demonstrate an understanding of numerical differentiation and numerical integration
4 demonstrate proficiency in the basic application of simulations, such as Monte Carlo simulations
5 formulate and numerically solve defined problems in civil engineering applications.
