Unit description

Examines the response of bodies or systems of bodies, at rest or in motion, to external load actions. Applied mechanics is the practical application of the principles of mechanics to real world examples. Statics is a branch of mechanics which deals with bodies at rest under the influence of forces in equilibrium. A teacher-student interaction strategy is used to ensure an understanding of the concepts and principles of mechanics.

Topic 1: Introduction to vectors
Topic 2: Vector sums, dot and cross products
Topic 3: Free body diagrams
Topic 4: Forces in equilibrium
Topic 5: Moments and couples
Topic 6: Centroids, first and second moments of area
Topic 7: Reactions in simply supported beams
Topic 8: Shearing force and bending moment
Topic 9: Trusses: reactions and forces in truss members
