    English for Academic Purposes 1 SCU College English Language Placement. Test Score equals 5.5 with no band <5.0 or a comparable score on a recognised test (for pathways to SCU Bachelor awards with 6.0 entry); and, Academic Purposes 1 SCU College English Language Placement. Test Score equals 5.0 with no band <4.5 or a comparable score on a recognised test (for pathways to SCU Diploma awards with 5.5 entry). English for Academic Purposes 2 SCU College English Language Placement Test Score equals 6.0 with no band <5.5 or a comparable score on a recognised test. English for Academic Purposes 3 SCU College English Language Placement Test Score equals 6.5 with no band <6.0 or a comparable score on a recognised test.

Unit description

EAP 1 is designed to build on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Prepares students for SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level 6.0 on entry, through developing language and academic skills such as: referencing, using an LMS, using plagiarism detection software, note taking, giving presentations and academic writing. EAP 2 is designed to build on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Prepares students for Master’s level study which requires SCU Language Test level 6.5 on entry, through developing language and academic skills such as: referencing, using an LMS, using plagiarism detection software, note taking, giving presentations and academic writing. EAP 3 is designed to build on existing language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening and the required academic skills to undertake research at Masters/PhD levels. Prepares students for study by research at SCU courses which require SCU Language Test level 7.0 on entry, through developing language and academic skills such as: preparing research proposals, meeting the requirements to submit the SCU Supervisor/Candidate Agreement Form, referencing, self-management of learning, using plagiarism detection software, participating in high level discussions with research supervisors, giving presentations and academic writing.

Upper-intermediate English forms and functions enabling undergraduate level study at SCU (with 6.0 entry) including:

  • Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
  • Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
  • Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
  • Listening and reading for information
  • Varieties of English including English on the Internet
  • Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)

Upper-Intermediate English forms and functions enabling Master’s level study at SCU (with 6.5 entry), including:

  • Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
  • Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
  • Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
  • Listening and reading for information
  • Varieties of English including English on the Internet
  • Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)

Advanced English forms and functions enabling research level study Masters/PhD levels at SCU (with 7.0 entry), including:

  • Pronunciation, academic grammar and vocabulary
  • Academic discourse markers and cohesive structures
  • Maintaining conversations and giving presentations
  • Listening and reading for information, research protocols
  • Varieties of English including English on the Internet
  • Academic writing genres (reports, essays, blogs)

* This unit is normally offered in 5 week blocks throughout the year. Students may enrol in 1 to 50 weeks depending on their English language proficiency on entry and the level aimed for at completion.
