Unit description

Explores past, current and emerging approaches to researching literacy and numeracy in education contexts, particularly research and designs that are useful for practicing teachers.  Students develop conceptual and theoretical frameworks concerning literacy and numeracy education, and learn key research skills through the analysis, synthesis and evaluation of literature and develop an action-research proposal suitable for a professional context.

  4. Action research for improving practice
  5. Implementing change: Reflecting on curriculum and pedagogy

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

locate and critique literature related to numeracy , literacy and English education

identify and relate problems, theories and paradigms in numeracy, literacy and English education

formulate and write a review of literature and a research approach for a problem in numeracy, literacy or English educational practice

demonstrate organisational referencing and citation skills appropriate to support the depth and breadth of research writing required for the unit.
