Unit description

Extends the skills and the beginning teacher’s methodological basis for teaching Dance or Drama in secondary schools with an emphasis on Stage 6 curriculum.  It aims to provide students with a variety of teaching and learning strategies for use in the senior classroom. In Dance, students relate their knowledge and experiences of Dance as an art form and the elements of Dance through the aspects of performing, composing and appreciating. In Drama, students relate and extend their knowledge and experiences of the dramatic elements through the aspects of making, performing and critically studying dramatic and theatre.  

Unit content

  1. Knowledge of Dance or Drama Stage 6: syllabuses content
  2. Knowledge of pedagogy in the context of the Dance or Drama Stage 6 syllabuses, critical assessment and linking of current pedagogical theory and principles (including the NSW DEC Quality Teaching framework)
  3. Knowledge of curriculum requirements for teaching Dance or /Drama at Stage 6

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate a broad and critical understanding of the knowledge base of the Stage 6 Dance or Drama syllabuses, including recent theory and research, contemporary perspectives and issues, and cultural contexts of relevance

source and assess the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning in the Dance or Drama Stage 6 syllabuses

develop engaging units of work and lesson plans related to selected theoretical and practical content and learning outcomes from a Dance or Drama Stage 6 syllabuses, demonstrating familiarity with the required syllabus outcomes, objectives, key competencies, knowledge, skills and understandings

apply current pedagogical theory including the NSW DEC Quality Teaching Framework to the development of effective teaching and learning strategies that encourage students with a diversity of learning needs, styles and cultural backgrounds to engage effectively with Dance or Drama in Stage 6

demonstrate well-developed written and oral communication skills, as appropriate to the needs and expectations of the profession

identify and critically examine assessment and reporting procedures and strategies in the context of the Preliminary and HSC standards-referenced assessment framework

Prepare assessment tasks and marking criteria for Stage 6 outcomes with emphasis on the integration of the various elements and aspects, as outlined in the course prescriptions
