Unit description

This unit equips students with the capacity to design learning experiences that engage Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary school students through the integration of Information and communication technologies (ICT) as an integral part of contemporary education for students, as well as professional practice for teachers.  There is an emphasis on evaluation of digital applications and resources to support differentiated teaching and authentic engagement for diverse learners in a range of learning environments. Students will critically consider a range of issues related to ICT implementation in education, including social and cultural considerations, ethical concerns, equity, and emerging forms of social practice and media. Theories and models specific to ICT in education are examined in order to support students in developing evaluation skills to critically assess the value of technology use in educational settings.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

integrate and evaluate the meaningful use of Digital Technologies—both through and about digital tools—to design differentiated, collaborative, and student-centred learning experiences that foster critical and creative thinking across classroom and online environments

use knowledge of relevant theories, models and frameworks to critically reflect on the impact of ICT in educational settings including the social, political, economic, and cultural issues for the teacher and the learner

apply strategies to verify and use information from diverse digital sources—including the Internet, social media, generative AI, and other digital resources—to ensure appropriate access, credibility, and ethical use by teachers and learners

safely and effectively create digital resources suitable for their professional context including storing and retrieving digital teaching resources, lesson preparation and class/faculty administration, and professional learning in online collaborative environments
