    Students must complete this unit with, or prior to enrolling in, [ EDUC5002 - The Learning Environment. To be successful in this unit students should have completed at least 2 Visual Art teaching (subject) area units before enrolling in this unit.

Unit description

Introduces students to visual arts teaching in secondary education. Students learn about syllabus requirements, the development of a unit of work, the development of detailed lesson plans and the selection of appropriate assessment strategies. There is also an opportunity to reflect critically on a range of contemporary pedagogical perspectives (including the NSW Quality Teaching Framework), and issues in the teaching of visual arts in NSW secondary schools. The focus in this unit is on the Years 7-10 classroom.

1. Knowledge of Visual Arts, Visual Design and Photographic & Digital Media Years 7-10, Stages 4 and 5 syllabi content

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of the Years 7-10 Visual Arts and elective syllabi (Visual Design and Photographic & Digital Media)

prepare detailed, engaging, coherent and effective lesson plans and units of work that relate to selected syllabus content and learning outcomes

demonstrate effective teaching and learning strategies, based on a range of current pedagogical frameworks

demonstrate and apply knowledge of syllabus cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities

apply an understanding of aspects of curriculum differentiation in order to meet the diverse needs and cultural backgrounds of learners, and to engage students in active learning

critically engage with a range of issues in teaching Visual Arts and assess the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Visual Arts Years 7-10 syllabi
