Unit description

Interrogates senior secondary science teaching practices in the 21st century. It builds on EDUC2004 - Science:  Secondary Curriculum and Pedagogy I to extend students’ understanding of secondary teaching in the key learning areas for the science Australian Curriculum and NSW Syllabus.  Students will design and facilitate lessons, assessments, resources and activities for NSW Years 11 and 12 Science Syllabuses/Australian Curriculum within in their subject areas. These designs will be informed by a range of teaching and learning priorities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, sustainability, critical and creative thinking, inquiry-based learning, differentiation, disability and inclusion, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy. A critical reflection on local and global issues and their significance to teaching and issues in the teaching of science in secondary schools will also be addressed. There will be a practical school based/community element incorporated into the unit.

Module 2: Assessment and reporting practices.

Module 3: Exploring how we teach in Senior Secondary Science. 

Module 4: Programming units and planning lessons.  

Module 5: Additional Considerations for Practice.

Module 6: Exploring the context of your senior secondary students’ lives.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

critically review Stage 6 Science syllabuses and apply this knowledge to design and justify curriculum-aligned assessment tasks, unit sequences and lesson plans, considering contemporary issues in senior secondary science

interpret syllabus outcomes. objectives and key competencies to design inclusive and differentiated unit and lesson plans that support effective learning for students from diverse backgrounds and abilities

develop effective teaching and learning activities to integrate literacy and numeracy strategies and source and assess the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Science Stage 6 syllabus or Australian Curriculum Year 11 and 12

implement professional knowledge to plan and enact safe laboratory and fieldwork activities, including risk assessment, OH&S management and appropriate use of equipment in senior secondary science contexts
