Unit description

Introduces knowledge and skills to become familiar with the textiles or metal industry’s production processes dependent on the student's specialisation choice. The structure, properties, characteristics, preparation, processing and selection of textiles or metal and textiles or metal products will be examined. Students will develop skills and knowledge related to safety, storage, preparation, processing, presentation, and industry-specific workplace communication skills, leading to the design, preparation, manufacture and presentation of textiles or metal products. 

Unit content

Module 1: Relevant theory, legislation, policy and practice for industry and schools.

Module 2: Material properties knowledge, performance and selection.

Module 3: Production and handling of materials. Properties, characteristics and performance (cont).

Module 4: Past, current and emerging technologies and production practices.

Module 5: Practise in the design and safe production of products using a variety of resources.

Module 6: Practise in the design and safe production of products using a variety of resources (cont).

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

define the theory, legislation, policy and practice for the industry

assess the structure, properties and characteristics of products

develop industry-specific communication skills, including literacy, numeracy and visual communication, to produce technical documentation, including production drawings, models and annotated representations

apply foundational industry skills and methods to safely design and produce metal or textile products using appropriate tools, techniques and processes
