Unit description

Introduces knowledge and skills to become familiar with the timber or food industry’s production processes dependent on the student’s specialisation choices. Students will examine the structure, properties, characteristics, preparation, processing and selection of timber or food-materials and timber or food products will be examined. Skills and knowledge will be developed related to safety, storage, preparation, processing, presentation, and industry-specific workplace communication skills, leading to the design, preparation, manufacture and presentation of timber/ food products. 

Unit content

Module 1: Relevant theory, legislation, policy and practice for industry and schools.

Module 2: Material properties, knowledge and product development.

Module 3: Material properties, knowledge and product development (cont.)

Module 4: Past, current and emerging technologies and production practices.

Module 5: Application of material knowledge in design.

Module 6: Practise in the design and safe production of products using a variety of resources.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

define the theory, legislation, policy, research and practice for the industry.

assess the structure, properties and characteristics of raw materials and products.

apply industry-specific communication skills, including literacy and numeracy, to clearly communicate processes, safety requirements and design decisions in practical demonstrations and written tasks

use foundational skills and methods to safely design, prepare and produce products in practical contexts
