Unit description

Introduces students to the foundation concepts of learning and teaching from an educational psychology perspective. Students analyse strategies, policies, legislation, and various theories and models of learning, in order to design positive instructional approaches for Aboriginal students and students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Module 1: The psychology of learning and teaching

Module 2: Teaching students from non-English speaking backgrounds

  • Government policies and legislation of relevance; ethical issues related to education in a culturally and linguistically diverse society
  • Understanding ESL pedagogy and ESL learners
  • Concepts of culture, identity and cultural diversity in education and impact of cultural and linguistic factors on student performance
  • Strategies and issues in relation to education of linguistic minority students including nature and duration of second language and literacy learning: Literacy strategies to meet specific NESB student needs
  • Skills in applying culturally inclusive practices in relation to curriculum, classroom teaching and assessment
  • Effective teaching and learning strategies for teaching second language learners in the context of the mainstream classroom and the range of learning areas

Module 3: Aboriginal Education

  • Aboriginal history and cultures and their significance for the diversity of Aboriginal perspectives
  • Concepts of culture, Aboriginal English, identity and cultural diversity and impact of cultural and linguistic factors on performance of Aboriginal students
  • National and NSW educational priorities and policies that impact on Aboriginal education
  • Aboriginal perspectives embedded in relevant syllabuses
  • Relevant issues for Aboriginal students and community in relation to schooling
  • Roles of Aboriginal support personnel within systems and at school and the contribution of Indigenous education and community organisations in improving learning outcomes for Aboriginal students
  • Effective teaching and learning strategies for meeting needs of Aboriginal students
  • Strategies of full inclusion of Aboriginal students in the educational life of the classroom and school
