Unit description

Explores the continuum of learning from teacher-directed to self-directed approaches, in relation to teaching aquatics and athletics. Students will also be required to think critically about the value and limitations of both of these approaches to learning. In addition, students will engage theoretically and practically with methodology for teaching aquatics and athletics in the school setting.

Unit content

Module 1

  • Introduction to teaching in aquatics and athletics
  • Introduction to teacher-directed and self-directed learning

Module 2: Athletics

  • Investigation of the STAR (Secondary Teachers Athletics Resource) Award program designed to teach everything required to know about grading, teaching and scoring the events involved in athletics, and how to set up and stage a school athletics carnival
  • Modules covered: 100m/200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m, hurdles, relays, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin, injury prevention
  • Each specific event is covered in detail with instructions
  • Completion of the STAR Award program as an example of teacher-directed delivery of athletics
  • Modelling and critical discussion of teacher-directed methods of delivery

Module 3: Aquatics

  • Bronze Medallion or equivalent 
  • Stroke correction 
  • Water Polo

The aquatic module will provide students with the resources and skills to develop and teach an effective aquatics program within a secondary school physical education program. The module will also develop student’s critical thinking, problem solving and evaluation skills, the ability to become a self-directed learner who learns through performance and Improved fitness and skill level through physical activity.
