Unit description

Develops students' capabilities in the use of information technologies to support learning in early childhood, primary and secondary settings. A focus is placed on pedagogical knowledge, strategies and critical evaluation and selection of resources that support integration across the curriculum.

Unit content

Topic 1 Creating a network (social networking in education for teachers and students)

Topic 2 Being safe (cybersafety and digital citizenship)

Topic 3 Being creative (selecting, using and creating multimedia to engage learners)

Topic 4 Finding the right tools (applying theoretical frameworks for selection and use of ICT tools and resources)

Topic 5 Making connections (connectivism as a learning theory for a digital age; online communication tools such as journals, blogs, wikis and websites; utilising live stream videos for connected interactions)

Topic 6 Being flexible (critiquing and applying sound pedagogical approaches to mobile technologies; BYOD and ipads)

Topic 7 Learning spaces (online virtual classrooms; virtual worlds and physical spaces for the 21st century)

Topic 8 Having fun (digital games and gamification in the classroom)

Topic 9 Creating challenges (project-, problem- and inquiry-based learning; computational thinking)

Topic 10 Being a 21st century teacher (emerging technologies for education; access and equity)

5 identify specific pedagogical methods and classroom management techniques required to manage ICTs in 21st century learning environment through developing the capacity for ongoing professional development as a 21st century teacher and learner
6 critically evaluate a range of factors influencing the adoption of ICTs in educational contexts such as current educational policies and practices including assessment practices and curriculum requirement
7 recognise the social and ethical issues surrounding the use of ICTs in the school and at home including the importance of critically approaching and verifying information, plagiarism, aspects of copyright, privacy, censorship, Internet safety and occupational health and safety.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
