Unit description

Enriches and broaden students' personal skills, knowledge, creative experiences and pedagogical understandings of music and musical activities to prepare them to work with children. Through participation in a range of musical activities appropriate for use with children (creating, singing, moving, learning/developing guitar skills and tuned percussion) students will further develop their pedagogical understandings.

Singing o skill development o classroom repertoire - Tuned percussion o skill development o repertoire o performance o improvising - Listening and responding o creative movement and drama o repertoire across culture and time - Integrating in the creative arts o strategies and implementation of instrumental classroom music o knowledge base underpinning the principles and practices of teaching and learning music o models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing primary music o range of strategies for teaching and assessing primary music o ways of differentiating curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners in the classroom.

1 Demonstrate knowledge of the central concepts of music education in the classroom, underpinning the principles and practices of music teaching and learning; demonstrate a broad and critical knowledge and understanding of the range of academic disciplines related to music including recent theory and practice
2 Design and implement lesson sequences using knowledge of the role and value of music in the broader school curriculum between this key learning area and literacy with inclusion of the NSW syllabuses or other curriculum requirements of the Education Act and demonstrate a range of strategies for teaching and assessing primary music programs and ways of differentiating curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners in the classroom
3 Perform music of different styles and from different times and cultures by singing, playing and moving using musical concepts; participate in a range and variety of drama and dance activities; demonstrate an understanding of movement skills and expressive qualities in relation to music; and demonstrate an improvement in their performance skills in these areas of singing, playing, moving and dramatising
4 Organise sounds into musical compositions using musical concepts
5 Build up a collection of resources which would be of value in teaching classroom music and demonstrate their growth in professional practice and knowledge through their commitment to and engagement with the unit content and associated activities.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
