Learning outcomes and graduate attributes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

1 demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of at least two Stage 6 Syllabus areas (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Senior Science or Physics) and be able to discuss critically a range of contemporary perspectives and issues on the teaching of Science in the senior school
2 prepare and present an outline of a unit of work and detailed lesson plans that demonstrate knowledge of syllabus key competencies, objectives and outcomes, that reflect a well-developed ability to plan for effective learning for students from diverse backgrounds and a range of abilities, that are clearly informed by the NSW Quality Teaching Framework and that demonstrate knowledge and understanding of specific strategies for teaching in the senior school
3 demonstrate a well-developed ability to utilise a range of strategies to assess student achievement of learning outcomes, to report the achievement of learning outcomes and to identify and critically examine assessment and reporting procedures and strategies in the context of the Preliminary and HSC standards-referenced assessment framework
4 apply suitable OH&S management, control and safety techniques, especially in relation to laboratory and fieldwork
5 reflect on teaching experience during practicum 1 and on current pedagogical theory to develop effective teaching and learning strategies that encourage senior secondary students' engagement with syllabus Knowledge, Understanding, Skills, and informed and responsible Values and Attitudes
6 assess the literacy and numeracy demands of the suite of Science Stage 6 syllabi and develop effective teaching and learning activities to integrate literacy and numeracy strategies and to source and assess the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Science Stage 6 syllabi
7 demonstrate well-developed skills written and oral communication skills, as appropriate to the needs and expectations of the profession.
