Unit description

Provides an understanding of the nature of English as a language of communication. It considers theories of the acquisition of language, and then the consequential principles and practices of teaching and learning. This will be in the context of a children's learning from early childhood to primary school years.

Unit content

1. English as a language of communication, including Aboriginal English and non-English speaking backgrounds.
2. Theories of language acquisition for children 0-12 years. 
3. Current principles and practices for scaffolding learning in talking, listening and early literacy. 
4. Children's literature and its role in the enhancement of language and literacy development. 
5. Planning for assisting the development of language acquisition (oral language assessment and strategies for scaffolding).
