Unit description

This unit introduces foundational principles of design research and design thinking for use in authentic problem-solving contexts. Students engage in project-based activities to explore drawing techniques, digital tools and multimodal communication for visualising and presenting design concepts. These learning opportunities develop capabilities in applying design thinking and communicating design ideas with emerging self-awareness. The unit’s disciplinary focus supports students to use design thinking processes in tasks connected to their chosen teaching area.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

define and describe design research and design thinking

apply drawing techniques and digital tools to communicate design concepts and solutions

develop abilities and self-awareness as an oral, written and visual communicator of designed solutions

design solutions for authentic contexts using design thinking processes relevant to their chosen discipline area
