Unit description

Focuses on the development of knowledge and understanding of the Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies subjects of the Australian Curriculum up to Years 7 & 8.  The New South Wales Technology Mandatory Years 7 & 8 course and the materials, tools and techniques related to a range of technologies associated with this curriculum. There is also an emphasis on the development of skills in the selection of materials, safe use of tools and equipment and appropriate techniques that will be developed through practical application in a workshop environment. Related WH&S issues will be addressed.

Unit content

The structure, teaching and management of Technologies subjects in Years 7 & 8.

Activities and processes undertaken by designers including the thinking skills and considerations in realising appropriate, ethical and environmentally responsible design solutions.

Current, emerging technologies and WHS considerations of Technologies Contexts such as:

  • Digital Technologies

  • Engineering Principles and Systems

  • Food and Fibre Production

  • Materials Technologies

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

understand the structure of, management and teaching of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies and NSW Technology Mandatory Years 7 & 8 course.

discuss the characteristics and properties of a range of materials used in the Australian Curriculum: Technologies and the NSW Technology Mandatory Years 7 & 8 course

demonstrate skills in using a variety of ICTs and other methods to design, produce graphic representations and use software applications appropriate to developing designed solutions.

demonstrate knowledge of and thinking skills in the responsible selection and safe use of materials, tools and techniques related to current and emerging digital technologies and design and Technologies.

explain WHS issues related to teaching and processes undertaken in Technologies Years 7 & 8.

produce a collection of practical work samples and reflect on personal learning and ongoing goals in demonstrating knowledge and skills across the contexts of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies, and the NSW Technology Mandatory Years 7 & 8 Syllabus.

demonstrate knowledge of designers, the nature of their work, the processes they follow, and the factors that influence their decisions.
