Unit description

Aims to give an understanding of the similarity in experience of a number of Indigenous Peoples in regard to the impact of colonialism. Indigenous People throughout the world have suffered cultural denigration, dispossession and attempted genocide at the hands of various colonial powers. They continue to suffer social, cultural, and economic effects of colonisation today. This unit will focus on Canada, USA, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and other relevant Countries.

Unit content

Topic 1: Defining terms: Indigenous, Colonisation etc.
Topic 2: Indigenous People in Canada, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea, and the United States of America (including Hawaii
Topic 3: Indigenous Land Rights and Native Title
Topic 4: International and national Treaty Rights
Topic 5: International Indigenous People and the various criminal justice systems, policing and prisons
Topic 6: Constitutional rights of Indigenous Peoples
Topic 7: Resources, environmental issues and hunting and fishing rights
Topic 8: Court decisions impacting on Indigenous Peoples
